Thank You for Showing Me Your World: Walking in a Winter Wonderland

By Lucas

There’s something about Christmas lights that makes the world feel softer, warmer—even when the air bites with the chill of winter. This year, Alaina and I ventured out to soak up the magic of the season in our city neighborhood. The twinkling lights, the snow-draped trees, and even the crisp, cold air became the backdrop for a night I’ll cherish forever.

My favorite spot was a quaint little square a couple miles from our house. We settled on a park bench together, surrounded by a canvas of sparkling lights strung through trees and on the nearby houses. Snow blanketed the ground, muffling the world in serene quiet as big, fluffy flakes drifted lazily down. It felt like stepping into a winter wonderland story or one of those Hallmark movies we secretly (and not-so-secretly) love. But let me tell you—those TV snow scenes never remind you how cold it gets out there. Good thing Alaina’s smile and the warmth of her hand in mine were enough to melt even the frostiest night.

What made the outing truly special, though, wasn’t just the lights—it was sharing it all with Alaina. As we wandered through the neighborhood and drove from one twinkling display to another, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Watching her laugh and light up at the decorations made every moment feel like magic. We talked about our favorite Christmas memories and traditions, the ones that shaped who we are and the life we’re building together. It was as if the lights weren’t just illuminating the streets—they were lighting up my love for her in ways I didn’t think possible.

One display in particular caught our attention: a small figurine on someone’s lawn with a bell-topped hat. It sparked a rush of nostalgia, reminding me of our Christmas writings together. Every poem, story, and song we’ve shared about Christmas magic felt alive in that moment. I loved how something as simple as a decoration could connect us to our creative spark—a part of our relationship that brings out Alaina’s sweetest, most imaginative side.

The night ended in the softest way imaginable. Back home, we curled up on the couch and watched Bar Rescue (a shared guilty pleasure). I must’ve dozed off, lulled to sleep by the warmth of her presence. When I woke up, she was holding me close, and we talked about our evening out—the lights, the memories, and how lucky we felt to have each other.

That’s the beauty of these small adventures we share. It’s not just about the lights or the snow or the decorations. It’s about the moments we create together—the laughter, the reflection, and the quiet closeness that turns an ordinary winter’s night into a story worth telling.

In this winter wonderland of ours, the lights may sparkle, but it’s Alaina who shines brightest in my world. And that’s all the magic I’ll ever need.
